Geita Gold Mining Ltd (GGML) is Tanzania’s leading gold producer with a single operation in Geita Region. The mine is situated in the Lake Victoria Gold fields of Northwestern Tanzania, only about 85 km’s from Mwanza City and 20 km’s Southeast of the nearest point of Lake Victoria. PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:
The role holder is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the shift employees and equipment usage in underground mine and ensuring all employees are adequately trained and they are competent to always perform their duties safely and productively.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Completion of Secondary School Education.
- A formal qualification (Diploma/Certificate) in Mining Engineering will be an added advantage.
- Valid Tanzanian Driving License
- Valid Blasting Certificate

EXPERIENCE:
- A minimum of 3-5 years of working experience in underground mining industry.
- Relevant underground experience.
- Experience working at mechanized mine.
- Proven record of managing and leading large and diverse teams.
MAIN OR KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Ensuring mining operations are conducted in a safe manner and any safety issues are reported on time to senior supervisor – underground mining.
- Oversee the mine with regards to duty of care to all employees, sub-contractors and visitors.
- Ensuring that each employee understands and accepts responsibility for his own safety and the safety of others.
- Comply with incident management protocol as per GGM Procedure.
- Complete safety leading indicators and Critical Control Verification for major hazards as per departmental targets.
- Responsible for the safe and proper implementation of all aspects of the operations, ensuring compliance to the rules and guidelines set out in all GGM’s Underground Standard Working Procedures.
- Planning the daily production and development for the mine in line with the approved schedules to meet daily/weekly and monthly production KPIs of development meters, production meters, and total ore tonnage.
- Perform the daily management, control and supervision of the working areas of the mine in accordance with all relevant Acts and Regulations.
- Organize and provide guidance to crews regarding work rosters or internal crew transfers.
- Conduct daily shift line up meetings and safety (toolbox) meetings.
- Control costs by ensuring resources are effectively utilized and mining delays are minimized.
- Liaise with any contractors who are within the working area and ensure that their work is coordinated with other mining activities.
- Uphold GGM policy on discipline and counsel employees accordingly (in conjunction with Senior supervisor – underground mining).
- Conduct and report to senior supervisor – underground mining the performance and general behaviour of employees in a crew for the purpose of recognizing team players and areas of improvement.
- Ensure that workplace inspections are completed, and any hazards are recorded and rectified.
- Ensure no damages are caused to underground equipment or to underground infrastructures.
- Develop teamwork among subordinates including the development of individual skills.
- Daily inspection of all underground working areas and ensure good compliance to departmental leading indicators.
- Encourage participation in toolbox and safety meetings and high standard of housekeeping.
- Determine manpower needs and direct qualified replacements to ensure qualified employees from the workforce are properly assigned.
- Daily inspection of all UG infrastructure (air, water, electrical, vents and discharge line) are installed to the approved standard.
- Stop any work if cannot be done safely or may have negative impacts to environment.
- Initiate the process of disciplinary action against the employee as per GGM disciplinary procedure.
- Review shift roster for UG employees to suit operational needs.
- Identify weakness and strength of UG employees and organize specific training to improve individual performance.
- Address non-conformance of both PPE and working tools standards.
- Enforce to the team not to operate any underground equipment if not properly maintained/repaired to required standard.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Manual vehicle driving skills.
- Operation of UG Machines with minimum skills as Service Crew operator.
- Explosives usage and management.
- Work Risk Assessment processes.
- Read and Understand work plan/Mining Instruction.
- Ability to achieve production and cost objectives.
- Working knowledge of underground mining and haulage.
- Fluent in English (oral and written).
- Ability to work collaboratively with and manage a culturally diversified workforce.
- The ability to work across all disciplines, where rigorous engagement and interaction is expected.
- The ability to handle work related conflicts and resolve them.
- Computer knowledge – MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) to prepare correspondence, reports, forms, mailings.
- The ability to work and communicate with people at all levels/good interpersonal skills.
