Mkinga District is a district located in the Tanga Region of Tanzania.
It is situated in the northeastern part of the country and covers an
area of approximately 4,801 square kilometers. The district is bordered
by the Indian Ocean to the east, Handeni District to the south, Muheza
District to the west, and Kenya to the north.

Mkinga District Council in Collaboration with Tanzania Health Promotion Support (THPS) will implement PEPFAR / CDC supported AFYA HATUA (Sustain Treatment, Enrolment and HIV Prevention- STEP) project in Mkinga DC aiming to deliver client cantered, comprehensive facility and community-based HIV prevention, care, and treatment services for population served by this District hence contribute to the country’s HIV epidemic control.

Geography and Climate:
Mkinga District is characterized by diverse geographical features. The
eastern part of the district is dominated by coastal plains along the
Indian Ocean, while the western part consists of hilly terrain and
plateaus. The district also encompasses parts of the Usambara Mountains,
which are known for their scenic beauty and rich biodiversity.
The climate in Mkinga District is generally tropical, with hot and humid conditions prevailing throughout the year. The district experiences two distinct rainy seasons: the long rains from March to May and the short rains from October to December. The average annual rainfall ranges from 800 to 1,200 millimeters.

Demographics and Economy:
According to the 2012 national census, Mkinga District had a population
of approximately 197,000 people. The majority of the population belongs
to various ethnic groups such as Zigua, Bondei, Sambaa, and Pare.
Swahili is widely spoken in the district, along with other local
languages.
The economy of Mkinga District is primarily based on agriculture. The fertile soils and favorable climate support the cultivation of crops such as maize, rice, cassava, bananas, and cashew nuts. Fishing is also an important economic activity due to the district’s proximity to the Indian Ocean.
Infrastructure and Services:
Mkinga District has a relatively well-developed infrastructure compared
to other rural areas in Tanzania. The district is connected to major
towns and cities through a network of roads, including the Tanga-Mombasa
Highway that passes through the district. However, some rural areas
