Intermediate Actuarial Specialist at UAP
Job Description
Provide a technical and fit-for-purpose actuarial business partnering service to Old Mutual Africa Region’s General Insurance (GI) entities [i.e. entities in Botswana, Namibia, Nigeria, Zimbabwe and the UAP-OM Group (operating in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and South Sudan)].

Key Result Areas
Project Delivery:
- Working with the business units to formulate and manage data-driven projects which are geared at furthering the business’s interests.
- Collating and cleaning data from various entities for use in the assigned data projects.
- Working with stakeholders to ensure successful completion of assigned projects.
Business Planning:
- Provided actuarial support during the business planning process
Business Partnering:
- Assisting business units to monitor and report the performance of key projects and strategic initiatives.
- Selecting and employing advanced statistical procedures to obtain actionable insights.
- Assist the business units to assess through producing non-technical reports that detail the successes and limitations of each project/strategic initiatives.
- Suggesting ways in which insights obtained might be used to inform business strategies.
- Staying informed about developments in the operating environment to ensure that outputs are always relevant.

Risk Management and control environment:
- Assist the business units to implement data validation programs to improve on the reserving/reporting controls
- Maintain and refine a reporting process to ensure timely and accurate distribution of relevant management information to RoA countries, Old Mutual Africa (OMA) and Old Mutual Limited (OML)
- Provide support in developing appropriate capital management metrics and a capital management framework for the GI entities within the Group
- Provide support to the Risk Management Function, including the ORSA
- Support the Corporate Actuary and the Finance Actuary in performing their oversight functions across the RoA entities
Reserves
- Provide support to the Corporate Actuarial team coin the implementation of IFRS17 across the various OMAR entities
Reinsurance Support
- Provide actuarial support, as applicable, in structuring reinsurance programs and assessing performance of the structures for entities in the Group.
- Maintain effective people practices
- Empower emerging leaders and specialists to achieve technical excellence and innovation
Requirements: Skills, Qualifications, Experience required
- Relevant bachelor’s degree in actuarial science, statistics, or mathematics
- Proficiency in R or Python , where the latter is preferred and power BI.
- In-depth understanding of SQL.
- Competent in machine learning principles and techniques.
- Ability to relay insights in layman’s terms, such that these can be used to inform business decisions.
- Demonstrable history of devising and overseeing data-centered projects.
- Capacity to foster a healthy, stimulating work environment that frequently harnesses teamwork.
- Senior actuarial student making good progress with exams (exceptional candidates who don’t meet this requirement may be considered)
- At least 3 years actuarial experience
- Strong technical and problem-solving skills
- A strong sense of accountability
- Travel is a requirement and compliance with prevailing ethical standards.
