Legal Assistant.

The overall purpose of the role: The legal assistant will provide legal support to People we Serve on humanitarian cases and offer legal training to refugees in Nduta camp. The legal assistant will work closely with legal interpreters on raising awareness to PwS on child protection, GBV, refugees’ rights, child labor, rights and responsibilities of child, voluntary repatriation, law of marriage, legal coaching, and counselling to PwS.

Responsibilities and tasks

  • In support of legal officer, provide legal advice and support to PwS when litigating refugee rights.
  • In collaboration with other DRC protection units and UNHCR raising legal awareness among refugees about different legal issues in the community and monitoring ongoing legal training for people we serve in the camp.
  • Provide legal aid to PwS through stationed and mobile legal help desk.
  • Participating in different zone community meetings and providing key legal updates.
  • Meeting with PwS and doing case follow up in the camp.
  • Drafting legal documents when needed such as card splitting, card merging, and voluntary repatriation agreements.
  • Conducting daily visitation at detention facilities which include police and immigration.
  • Assisting in developing legal projects such as concept notes and proposal writing.
  • Updating monitoring table and case database.
  • Preparing various reports such as weekly, monthly, and midyear reports.
  • Making mediation and negotiation in cases such as matrimonial, neighborhood, and family conflicts.
  • Assigning duties and supervising legal incentives in performing their duties.
  • Serves as a link between the DRC and other stakeholders such as judiciary, police, immigration, MoHA, UNHCR
  • Undertaking legal research and organizing legal training to incentive staff.
  • Take over any other task designated by the Manager or team Leader to ensure proper functioning of the Legal department.
  • Ensure DRC’s accountability commitments are mainstreamed into all protection units
  • Any other tasks required by his/her supervisors in the limit of his/her expertise.

Experience and technical competencies: (include years of experience)

  • Experience of more than two years in humanitarian context.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working in INGO, with additional knowledge of human rights law and international refugees’ law.
  • Able to work in challenging environments and meet deadlines.
  • Flexible, team player, proactive and independent
  • Technical understanding of core protection concepts, and response strategies in line with best practices.
  • Experience working in protection in an integrated manner with other humanitarian sectors of intervention.
  • Experience working with displaced or conflict affected populations.
  • Strong planning, organizational, and problem-solving skills with the ability to work both independently and within a team.
  • Integrity, strong work ethic, and ability to consistently meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to learning and implementing organizational policies and procedures.

Full proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel

Education:

  • University bachelor degree in Law.
  • Must be Tanzanian.

Languages:

Excellent proficiency in written and spoken English and Swahili, knowledge of Kirundi is an advantage

Will strengthen capacity and support legal practitioners representing PW’s in need of international protection. The legal officer will work closely with legal assistants and interpreters on raising awareness to PW’s on child protection, GBV, refugees’ rights, child labor, rights and responsibilities of child, voluntary repatriation, law of marriage, legal coaching, and counselling to PW’s.

  • Represent PwS in court, minors in juvenile court, and planning visitation to prisoners in Kasulu/Kibondo DC.
  • Working with legal assistants and interpreters in ensuring there are legal help desks (mobile and stationed) for legal awareness to PwS such as permits to go outside the camp.
  • Making mediation and negotiation in cases such as card splitting, and neighborhood and family conflict.
  • Assists PwS seeking orders for protection and attends court hearings when needed.
  • Assigning duties and supervising legal incentives in performing their duties.

PSN Integrated Protection Assistant (Social worker) 2 Positions.

Overall purpose of the role: Integrated social worker is responsible for the implementation of activities under one or more of the following sectors: community-based rehabilitation, social protection of People with specific Needs, support to PSN committees, community engagement, distribution of NFIs, and PSN case management.

Responsibilities: (in bullet points)

  • Conducting needs assessments of PSN and making sure that the appropriate support is provided.
  • Train community structures PWDs and OPCs on identified needs and agreed modules.
  • Conduct home visits, outreach, and risk assessment, and make sure that protection solution is done for assigned zones and proper reporting of PSN protection at the camp level.
  • Ensure that PSN Safeguarding standards are considered in all activities
  • Facilitate various sensitization campaigns and awareness-raising sessions with PSN.
  • Participate in community engagement meetings such as Town hall meetings, and monthly community leaders with partners meetings, and ensure PSN rights are mainstreamed.
  • Conduct follow-up to PSN survivors of violence, abuse, and neglect and make sure that PSNs are living a well and dignified life.
  • Facilitate the identification and linking of PSN with dietary diversification needs to the Kitchen Gardening program.
  • Conducting feedback sharing meetings with the PSN committee on issues affecting PSN in their zones and following up on raised concerns with appropriate service providers for early assistance of PSN.
  • Conduct focus group discussions with different ages and sex (mainly PSN) on specific topics based on identified needs, service gaps, and protection risks
  • Support Community Focal Point In needs assessments and immediate assistance to PSN approach
  • Provide regular weekly updates and monthly reports
  • Perform other duties assigned by the supervisor

Experience and technical competencies: (include years of experience)

  • 2 years of work experience in a related field
  • previous experience working with refugees – preferable
  • previous experience working in international organizations mandated for PSN protection– preferable

Education: (include certificates, licenses etc.)

  • Diploma or bachelor’s degree in Community Development, Social work, sociology, psychology, physiotherapy, development, law, or other related fields

Languages: (indicate fluency level)

  • English (spoken and written – very good)
  • Kiha (spoken – good) – preferable
