The Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF), known in Swahili as Jeshi la Ulinzi la Wananchi wa Tanzania (JWTZ), is the military force of the United Republic of Tanzania. Established in September 1964, the TPDF was formed in response to a mutiny by the former colonial military force, the Tanganyika Rifles. The foundation of the TPDF was rooted in the principle that it would serve as a people’s army under civilian control, distinguishing it from many other African militaries that have experienced coups and civil unrest.
