Job Title: Group Treasury Manager

Level: Senior Management

Reports To: Group Head of Finance/Group CFO

Context/Scope:  

EABL is East Africa’s leading branded alcohol beverage business, with a wide and outstanding collection of brands that range from beer and spirits to adult non-alcoholic drinks. The Group’s extensive network of breweries, distilleries, and distribution facilities span the six countries in East Africa, and especially concentrated in the three core markets of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. EABL is listed in all the three East African Securities Exchange Markets: Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE), Dar-Es-Salaam Stock Exchange and Uganda Stock Exchange.

Recommended:

EABL electronic payment system is operated at Diageo Business Service India (DBSI) for Group companies. Most advanced banking technology and high level of coordination between Treasury, DBSI and banking industry is required for efficient payment system. In course of its operations, the Group has issued various bank guarantees and custom bonds. These calls for monitoring and consistent reviewing.

The Treasury Function operate under the context shown above, with primary responsibility of managing and providing advice on all factors affecting Group capital structure, cash flows, various financial investment/funding decisions and currency risks associated with the day-to-day running of Group business activities.

Market Complexity            

The role will cover all EABL Group operations in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and exports to adjacent African countries among others. EABL Group activities involve extensive and high value cash transactions in the region dominated in various currencies with KES, UGX, TZS, RWF, USD, GBP, EUR, and ZAR forming the core portfolio of currencies. The Group is a net importer of goods and services and therefore exposed to foreign exchange fluctuations.

The Group has one of the highest cash positions across East Africa. These funds call for accurate, timely and aggressive daily management. Group cash management involves daily determination of cash position, making funding and investment decisions, doing various cross-currency transactions, and ultimately effecting various inter-bank cash transfers. The Group’s capital structure contains a mix of equity and debt funding.

Leadership Responsibilities

This role will work closely with DBSI, EABL bankers, EABL Share Registrars, Finance Directors of the EABL Business Units, Diageo Group Treasury, and Procurement teams on various treasury and cash management and planning issues.

Purpose of the Role           

To provide technical treasury support in areas of all Group cash, financing and foreign currency exposure management while ensuring accurate accounting of all group cash transactions.

Role Responsibilities

  • Work with Diageo Group Treasury, Finance Directors and the Banking Industry to manage EABL’s capital structure and balance sheet ratios to ensure that the Group maintains an optimal capital structure and leverage levels to support its growth ambitions while at the same time ensuring compliance with debt covenants.
  • Fund raising for key strategic events. This involves identification of optimal funding sources. It also involves negotiation and execution of commercial terms for the funds.
  • Financial risks management: Management of the Group’s liquidity risk, foreign exchange risk, counterparty risk and interest rate risk and development of risk mitigation strategies.
  • Cash and liquidity management through cash flow planning and forecasting.
  • Maintain strong relationship with lenders and banking partners.
  • Support the Finance Directors in the working capital management initiatives including but not limited to management and negotiation of various distributors financing and suppliers financing schemes.
  • Managing treasury operations and controls (cash pooling/sweeping, forex dealings etc.)
  • Driving treasury specific projects/initiatives across the region.

Qualifications and Experience Required       

Qualifications

  • 1st degree in business related studies
  • A fully qualified Accountant in CPA(K), ACCA or its equivalent.
  • CFA qualification is an added advantage.
  • Sound training on treasury and corporate finance skills.

Experience

  • Over 7 years post qualification experience in Treasury or in financial management field
  • In depth knowledge of international trade and world economic trends with particular emphasis on fundamentals driving interest rates, exchange rates and general economic growth.
  • In depth knowledge and experience in financial instruments including derivatives, business valuation models and business financing options.
  • In-depth knowledge of East African region money and capital markets
  • In depth treasury management skills and especially on foreign exchange, interest rates and cash management
  • Full understanding of East African taxation, and other legislation affecting day to day functioning of corporate institutions.
  • Wide accounting knowledge and experience

  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage projects, prioritize and work to deadlines.
