In Tanga, cerebral malaria and black water fever are the two main forms of severe malaria that account for the majority of fatalities. The concept of a hospital was created since there was a lack of a good health center (hospital) during that time. Dr. Alexander Berker, the first Chief Medical Officer of the Government of Tanganyika, was given the idea.
The Liebels Hotel, which stood in front of the Sea View Hotel, was rented out and utilized as a hospital prior to the erection of the Regional Referral Hospital buildings. Dr. Alexander Berker had finalized the blueprints for the Government Hospital that is still in use today, therefore the facility was only used for a brief period of time. The site of the former Liebels Hotel is currently occupied by a gas station. Nine years after it started, in 1896, the modern Tanga Regional Referral Hospital was finished.
