
Mkuranga District Council was formally established when it was gazetted on 1st Julay 1995 in Pwani region. It was created out of the old Kisarawe District also a district of Pwani region. It is one of the seven councils that form the Pwani Region.

The District council is divided into four divisions and 25 wards with a total of 121 villages and 463 hamlets distributed unevenly. Panzuo ward covers about 13.2 percent of total land area of the council followed by Mkamba ward with about 9.6 percent of the total land area. Kitomondo ward has the smallest land area in the council constituting only 1.6 percent of the total council land area.
