Position: Entomologist/Laboratory Manager

WorldVeg’s Regional Office for Eastern and Southern Africa located in Arusha, Tanzania conducts vegetable research and training and provides information services for the benefit of its stakeholders in the horticultural sector in Africa.
As part of its activities under the project ‘Multiflower’ (Introducing biological control measure for growing ornamental crops) and other projects, the Regional Office is looking for a talented, diligent, ambitious and reliable Tanzanian citizen, who places importance on quality, team-work and diligence for the position of Entomologist/laboratory manager. 
Key responsibilities
The successful candidate will report to the Manager of the Multiflower Project, and will co-supervise one or more technicians.
Specific responsibilities may include:
  • Manage the entomology laboratory, including safety and ensure day-to-day functioning.
  • Conduct laboratory, screen house and field experiments to assess the efficiency of local natural enemies to control aphids.
  • Conduct laboratory experiments to develop a methodology for insect rearing.
  • Organize training on biological control, throughout Tanzania.
  • Contribute to project reporting and represent the project on different workshops and other events.
  • Prepare field reports.
  • Draft scientific publications.
Skills, knowledge and qualifications
  • A Master of Science (MSc) related to entomology from an accredited university.
  • Excellent knowledge of and proven experience in laboratory safety rules and functioning.
  • Proven experience in biological control. Previous experience with aphids and their natural enemies would be an asset
  • Experience in working with microbial agents is considered a strong asset.
  • Proven experience in conducting all aspects of laboratory, screen house and field trials; from design, implementation, collection, analysis of data to publication of results. A track record in publications is considered a strong asset.
  • Demonstrated experience in staff management.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in agricultural development within an international environment, preferably an international non-governmental organization (NGO).
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and interact with partners and colleagues in a multi-cultural setting.
